Authentic Representation of Queer Characters
Are the sapphic characters written with depth and individuality? Do they have their own goals and motivations, their own backstories and families? It’s essential to flesh them out with believable traits while avoiding harmful stereotypes or tropes that feel dated. Representation should go beyond just sexual orientation, encompassing aspects like race, disability, or neurodivergence. Does the story feel like it’s written for queer readers, not just about them?
Believable Chemistry Between the Leads
Is the attraction shown through actions, body language, and conversation, or is it just told? Do the characters have moments of tension, vulnerability, and growth together? Is the chemistry consistent throughout, or does it feel rushed or forced?
Emotional Arc and Relationship Development
Are the romantic beats paced in a way that feels natural? Does each character have their own arc alongside the romance? Are conflicts realistic and resolved in a satisfying way?
Balance Between Romance and Plot
Does the romance mesh well into the main storyline? Are there any outside stakes that keep the story moving? Is the romance the focus, or is it the subplot? Does that balance work for the intended genre?
Realistic Dialogue and Voice
Does each character have a distinct voice? Does the dialogue sound like something real people would say? Are queer-specific experiences and references used naturally?
Sensitivity and Cultural Accuracy
Are sensitive topics, such as coming out, discrimination, and past trauma, handled respectfully? Are cultural or community references accurate and free from clichés? Would this story resonate with a sapphic audience without alienating them?
Overall Reading Experience
Did I feel emotionally invested from start to finish? Was I rooting for the couple? Would I recommend this book to other sapphic readers?
The Importance of Feedback
Feedback is crucial in the writing process. It helps authors refine their stories and ensures that they resonate with their intended audience. As a beta reader, I strive to provide constructive feedback that highlights strengths while also pointing out areas for improvement.
Connecting with the Community
If you are a sapphic author, I encourage you to work with beta readers who love and understand the genre. Engaging with the community can provide invaluable insights. Sharing experiences and perspectives can enhance the authenticity of your writing.
